An evening where rich musical heritage meets contemporary culture

About SG-JP Music Mix 2016

Singapore-Japan (SG-JP) Music Mix 2016 is a unique performance that creatively mixes the music of five top artistes from Singapore and Japan.
The concert will feature an extraordinary line-up of top Japanese artistes who exemplify traditional yet contemporary elements in their music, and established Singaporean artistes who come from diverse cultural backgrounds. They include the legendary Hideki Togi, and the talented Tokyo-born, Singapore-raised Sachiyo – as well as Singaporean artistes Dick Lee, Shabir and Olivia Ong.
The concert is a special collaboration comprising newly arranged Singapore songs that are blended with Japanese traditional music and instruments.

The event will also see the legendary and award-winning Hideki Togi performing in Singapore for the first time.
Togi was born into one of the very few selected, noble families that for more than 1,300 years have safeguarded the musical tradition of Gagaku, ancient Japanese Imperial Court Music.
SG-JP Music Mix 2016 is a special edition concert held in conjunction with SJ50, the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Japan.

Gagaku (雅楽)

1,400-year-old Japanese Imperial Court Music

Gagaku, literally “elegant music” is the world’s oldest orchestral music with a history of 1,400 years in Japan.
It has blossomed as part of the court culture in the eighth to 12th centuries and has been carefully preserved and handed down over a thousand years by masters in the music department of the Imperial Household Agency in Japan.

Gagaku comprises many musical traditions and influences, imported largely from the Asian continent and Japanese nobles of  the mid-10th century, which brought these together with Japan’s indigenous songs and dances to form Gagaku.
In 2009, Gagaku was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in accordance with the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Hideki Togi

A Legendary, Award-winning Gagaku Musician Performs in Singapore for the First Time!

Hideki Togi was born into one of the very few selected, noble families that for more than 1,300 years have safeguarded the musical tradition of Gagaku, ancient Japanese Imperial Court Music.
Having spent his childhood in Thailand and Mexico, Togi was exposed to different styles of music from rock to classical and jazz.
After graduating from high school, he joined the music department of the Imperial Household Agency where he played the Hichiriki, Biwa, Tsuzumi, Cello, and also sang and danced, becoming a master of all the exotic instruments that give his music its eerie beauty and depth.
In addition to performing at Imperial Court ceremonies and Gagaku concerts at the Imperial Palace, Togi has played an important role in introducing Japanese traditional culture to overseas as well as promoting international friendship. He currently collaborates with artistes in various genres in all over the world and passionately creates his own music by combining the natural flavour of Gagaku.

He is also the recipient of the Gold Disc Awards for Album of the Year in traditional Japanese music nine times since 2000.
